Default now i got trany problems nv3500

My transmission is growling when parked in neutral. It is a nv 3500 4x4. It growls unless clutch pedal is pushed in then sounds fine. It also growls while driving. Soundslike a bunch of rocks in a blender. Shifts fine dosent pop out of gear seems to work fine. Checked oil level was over full by about 3 quarts or so at proper level now but noise is no different. Any ideas?

Hi this is not a transmission problem.

It is a throw out bearing problem, Change the clutch at the same time.

Could be throwout bearing or input bearing. You're not using gear oil are you?

Ok I finally got the clutch, input shaft bearing and throwout bearings replaced. Got rid of some of the noise. Also changed the oil in the transmission, it had a lot of metal shavings in it. The noise is not so bad when idling any more but 1st 2nd and 3 rd growl real bad 4th is quiet and 5th growls but not as bad as the rest. Am I looking for a new tranny or is there something else I should look into first. Thanks.

It's probably the countershaft bearings since it's quiet in 4th (you didn't mention that before). Did you confirm what kind of oil it had in it? Gear oil will destroy these trannys. You either need a full rebuild or a new tranny. Overfilling (with the proper fluid) shouldn't be a problem either. I've always ran 3 full quarts in mine (twice the capacity) and it has over 200k miles on it and it gets beat like it owes me money.

I didn't know it before. The throwout was bad also. Kinda funny th clutch looked brand new and the flywheel looked like it just came back from the machine shop. I gues that's why my grand dad used to smack me in the head for riding around with my foot on the clutch pedal. It was some kind of gear oil definitely synthetic and verry thin about like hydraulic oil. I was thinking it was the bearings but I was hopeful it wasn't. I hope I can find a trans around here but I think my chances are slim to none.

How hard is it to convert. Isn't the 4500 shorter with the shifter farther forward?
