Default Converting my 99 ram to 4 wheel drive?

Im tossing the idea around. Basically i plan on trying to convert my 2 wheel drive into a 4 wheel drive.

Ive thought about this before but last time i looked at doing it with new parts and realized itd be cheaper to buy a used 4 wheel drive then to do the swap. But this time i plan on getting all the parts from the junkyard. I found a 99 ram at the junkyard with the front axle i could use but it was missing the transfer case. My main question is could i use any transfer case of off any truck or does it have to be a specific one?

Any input on this would be awesome. From anyone who may have done it before.

Thanks, T

I don't know the answer to you're question but to me it makes more sense to sell that truck and just buy a 4x4.why go trough all that?

I'm not sure how much different an '01 and a '99 are but I asked the same question regarding my 01', here's a link to my replies:

Lotsa work doing that conversion. In the end, you would be better off, and spend less money.... just selling the 2wd, and buying a 4x4.

Or he could lower his gears a little and install and locker for the rear end. maybe some good all terrain off road tires. Would get you further then a stock open rear diff.

I'm thinking the frames are different too.

Yes, you could use a different transfer case, as long as it was of equal strength as the stock one, and would physically fit. Obviously you'd have to fab up yokes and driveshafts to mate it to the front and rear diffs.

But as others have said, I wouldn't bother. In the time it will take you to do that, you could earn twice the money it will cost you to move up to a 4wd truck.

Do this:

See if you can find a junked 4x4 that was junked because of a minor collision or a blown engine. Use your current truck as a parts truck.

It does not take much to total a secondgen!!

if you don't mind spending more time and money than the truck is worth, at least make a try,
