Default Timing gasket kit with or without sleeve?

I have a 2001 w/5.9 and I'm replacing the timing set. I see that Felpro has 2 different kits available for their timing gasket.

FEL-PRO Part # TCS45996, w/o Sleeve 'N' Seal®; Must be used w/OS 34409R; PermaDryPlus® timing cover gskt. incl

FEL-PRO Part # TCS45999, Timing Cover Set w/Sleeve; w/Sleeve 'N' Seal®; Must be used w/OS 34409R; PermaDryPlus® timing cover gskt. incl.

Do I need the one with the sleeve and sleeve seal?

you only need the sleeve if you have a horribly deep groove worn into the harmonic balancer's seal contact point. most people don't/

+1

The sleeve goes on the harmonic balancer and gets locked down with a bit of loktite type goo. Don't mess with a sleeve unless you absolutely have to.

That's what I was thinking about the groove. It's not leaking so I will probably go with the same kit that candymancan got. Since I'm getting most of my parts at rockauto, this gasket kit it's only $14.

Thanks guys!

I used the sleeve on mine. I didn't need it but I bought the kit with sleeve and was worried the seal might leak if I didn't use the sleeve with it. It works great.

So I just want to double check. I have the sleeve n seal kit and I'm ready to do the timing chain in the next week or two. The only reason to install the sleeve is if there's a groove on the harmonic seal contacting surface, correct?

Correct. My personal preference is for the offset seal if there is a significant groove though.... Not sure if they are available for dodges.... haven't had to check.

I don't know if the seal that comes with the kit with the sleeve is larger inner diameter though, if it is, it may not seal well without the sleeve.

So wait, I might of screwed myself by getting the sleeve n seal kit? Would I be obligated to use the sleeve in order for the timing cover seal to fit right?

Same seal in both kits. The sleeve is paper thin. You only have to use it if you have a groove in your shaft. For the couple dollars extra it's good insurance. You never know what you will find until you pull it off.
