A 46RE would probably unbolt itself and start running, if you put an oil burner in the bed.

A Jasper rebuild (or ATK for that matter) would cost me more than I paid for the truck, and frankly even if I thought it was worth it, I don't have the money for that anyway.

Pulling my motor and getting it rebuilt is an option, but the parts kit alone is almost $700, and who knows what kind of mill work will have to be done to the heads and the block.

Used engine it is.

I would pay real money to see that. Of course, I would die laughing.......

You can always hang on to the original engine, and slowly collect parts for the rebuild......

The first gen Cummins trucks had the A727 and later the 46RH from the factory.

The old first gen 12V makes only slightly less than the 24V and the 12V first gen 12V can be easily turned up. The 2nd gen 12V with the P7100 IP makes the same power as the 24V and can make A LOT more with a few tweaks.

I even considered a 4BT but they cost nearly twice as much on the used market as a used 6Bt. With the 4Bt I'd save on weight up front (only have to upgrade springs rather than the front axle, the 4Bt only weighs 100 pounds more than the 360 gas engine) and likely save wear on the drivetrain, but let's face it, at 230k, this trans and rear-end ain't gonna hold up forever, especially if I drop something with even slightly more power in it.

But really the deal breaker would be the electronics. I can run the Cummins motor off one wire, but the truck requires lots of electronics if I want the speedo, odometer, AC, airbags, etc to work.... Hmmm.....I'm talking myself back INTO this again...
