is the front band the one on the outside of the pan or inside? I will check haynes when i get home from work. I have to pull my wifes starter out her 97 dodge caravan

there was very thin metal shavings that was more of a muck substance (it was silver) but the fluid was dirty in color

The answer is yes. Rear band requires pan to be dropped.
