With the chain OFF:
1. Rotate crank until the piston is at the top.
2. Rotate the cam until the intake valve is fully closed, the rotor should be pointed to the #1 cylinder on the distributor.
3. Take off the sprockets and REINSTALL them at 12 oclock and 12 oclock Do NOT rotate the engine to do that.
4. Install the chain and timing cover
5. Install the balancer/pulley lined up with the TDC mark on THEM and the Timing cover.

It should fire up.

If Step 2 does not yield the rotor pointing to #1, then something is wrong and you might need to pull the distributor. But only do that as a last resort and wait for someone other than me to chime in.
the cam gear and rotor is at the #1 wire already? and is at 12 oclock as well. and same for the crank gear it is TDC to? but i think it may be on the exhaust stroke not comp stroke

ok so i have to turn the cam gear until the valves close back up. then wen they are closed the cam gear should return back to the 12 oclock position correct? and then after the cam gear is set i turn the crank until TDC comes up put the chain on. put the TC covero n and balnencer and if all lines up all it good?

yeah, I forgot the whole compression stroke. But the fact is that he messed everything up by getting the Piston to TDC and the camshaft to where the intake valve is fully closed, then moved the camshaft to get the rotor to #1.

Wouldn't that cause a problem? he is moving the valvetrain away from where it should be at TDC.

However, it should not make a difference, because if the piston is at TDC, then he would just need to move the cam until the rotor was to the #1 mark to get the valvetrain lined up with TDC since he never took the cam out.

You are missing the point. you get the piston and valvetrain lined up to TDC THEN INSTALL THE SPROCKETs TO 12 oclock and 12 oclock without turning anything.

you can have the sprockets lined up any way and the truck will start (If the piston and valves are in position for TDC). But if you get everything lined up then start moving the crank and camshaft independently, you are going to mess up being at TDC!

now what if the rotor was at the #1 wire already and so is the cam gear? i did that tonight and i thought i TDC it come to think of it the second set of valves were open. thats not right either. so i need to give the cam gear a full revolution and get the crank on its compression stroke

now what if when i get the crank to TDC and the cam to TDC and i go to put the gears back on. what if they dont meet up at 12 and 12? then that means im still not TDC on somthing right?

because, when you take the sprockets off when the engine is NOT at TDC, then if you put them back on and rotate them to 12/12 then you will not actually be at TDC.

I know this much and I am still afraid to do a cam swap.
