tranny Problems

Whatever you do, don't flush the tranny.
Also, it is toast. Don;t try to figure out what it is on this forum, then go tell a specialist what is wrong. Mechanics hate it when you bring a truck to them and YOU tell them what is wrong. They are more likely to shaft you.
But, it needs a rebuild or you should just get a new tranny.

Soooo, you can replace the transmission for 2-5 grand, or you can service the thing and adjust the bands for less then 100 bucks... I've seen worse come out of a transmission and I've been able to service them and have them run properly. Most important issues to keep in mind for the tranny is keep the fluid and filter clean, the temperatures down, and the bands adjusted. Bands only need adjustment maybe once a year if you really wanted to be precise about how they are adjusted. Other then that, the normal fluid and filter change as well as maybe an additional tranny cooler is all that thing will need if everything isnt already toast. Just service the thing and see what happens. If you want to go spend an extra couple hundred bucks on new electronics for the valve body then you can go ahead, it certainly won't hurt. Just be sure that the fluid is absolutely clean throughout the transmission before you change the sensors so that they don't get all gunked up if there's lots of dirt in the tranny floating around. Also, be sure to put a drainplug in the bottom of your fluid pan so that next time you want to check how clean the fluid is or next time you want to change the fluid, you won't have so much trouble. Nut, Washer, Bushing, Bolt, and Small Welder is all you need.
After the tranny is serviced, run around for maybe 20-50 miles and inspect fluid again, if lots of debris is still floating around, continue changing out the fluid some more. Don't forget to get a couple cans of "Kooler Klean" to flush the debris that may be stuck in your radiator.
Simple servicing may very well bring your tranny back into shape. Worst case scenario, you will be without maybe 30-60 dollars for the fluid and filter. Best case scenario, after fluid and filter change as well as band adjustment, you'll be on the road again for 12000 miles until the next regularly scheduled transmission servicing.
