Just a couple bolts on the back side of the tank, also need to pull the flow control valve. (the part the pressure hose screws into.)

I have NEVER had any success replacing just the pump, on vehicles that had the pump in the reservoir, it ALWAYS leaked around the pump face to housing interface. There's gotta be some trick to making that work, but, I sure don't know it.

Doesn't VWandDodge have a DIY on this, in the FAQ/DIY section?

I bit the bullet and spent the $65 on a pump with reservoir on it. It's not worth the headache. Kinda like trying to rebuild your steering gear box.

He sure does; quite a write-up, with 8 x 10 glossies with circles and arrows on the back of each one. (Born after 1965? Disregard that).

He does the whole pump rebuild, but shows how the reservoir comes off and goes back on, with a new O-ring and some vaseline he just happened to have lying around.

I've swapped reservoirs at least once, maybe twice, and it's never been a problem getting a good seal. Just have to make sure the mating surfaces on the reservoir are nice and straight, and fit snugly against the o-ring. I can see saving a few bucks by swapping reservoirs, if the old one is in decent shape. Not sure if I'd bother rebuilding the pump, but as I just let on, I'm old.

Well how was I supposed to know that? That's the last thing I would have expected from you.
