Default Tranny rebuild ideas

Hey Everyone!

I have a 1999 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 sport, 5.2, automatic, ext cab short box, 158,000 miles. And my tranny just fried. I currently cant afford the rebuild, so its parked for now. So my question is, should i do anything special with the rebuild? Shift kit maybe? It is a daily driver, I take it to the dunes quite often, i like to hit some mud holes now and then. Right now its stock height, with 265/75-r16 tires, so nothing too special there. No engine mods yet. But id like to lift it 3 inches, 20 in rims with 35 inch tires, put in a true dual exhaust, cold air intake, different gears, and a programmer. Im open to any ideas! Specificaly on the gearing and the transmission. Thanks guys! Im looking to spend no more than $1500. (not including the tranny and the lift/rims/and tires obviously) Thanks guys!

I THINK the Sports come with 4.10 gears from the factory...again, I think, so if so, you are okay on the gears, unless you really wanted 4.56's. as far as the trans goes, when looking for a trans builder, I would tell them EXACTLY what you plan on doing in the truck and let them come up with a build that suits your purpose.

The OFF-Road package came with the 4.10 gearing. Have a look in your glove box to see if the sticker is there, or email dodge for a build sheet to find out what you really have.

For the trans, check out page six of MonteC's transmission corner in the FAQ section, there is a list of suggested parts for a member that regularly towed a 7k pound trailer. That should give you a nice, stout, trans.

Before you start doing mods, read the stickied plenum thread at the top of this forum. Need to make everything work as it is supposed to before you start modifying.

You should include right around 1500 bucks for re-gearing your differentials if you want to run 35's. Your stock gears are more than likely 3.55's....... and with the bigger tires, that's gonna kill your low end grunt, and is rather hard on the trans.

Thanks guys! I'm on posting this from work, just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't ignoring the input haha. I'm gonna take a look at my info sticker and give you more info on my truck as far as current gearing! Thanks again!

Look at the sticker on the hood or radiator support, should be one in the glove box too. It will tell you what gears you have.
