Looks like snap ring. Very. Time for a rebuild.

Yeah, what he said. At the very least, rebuild the O/D unit.

Possible piece from the planatary gear? Either way that should not be in there. Re-build.

OK, I'll be your one little ray of potential sunshine. I think it can be said that it's possible that if that is from a snap ring, that the rest of it is still in place. If not, wouldn't you see a broken snap ring, or parts of one, floating around somewhere in your tranny case? You should be able to see in there pretty well with the cover off. Or maybe it's a little chunk off of a gear that still works OK.

And is the tranny giving you any trouble? I know these guys are eager to rip Two Large out of your wallet, but maybe just button it up and run it, being prepared to rebuild it at the first sign of actual trouble. And who knows; if doctors can leave sponges inside patients, maybe it's been in there since your tranny was manufactured.

I'm not anxious to rip anything out of anyone's wallet. Mine was about $600 with upgraded parts and me doing the labor. But I had to pull it twice to get it right. I cannot advise to let it go until problems arise, as any damage caused would be more catastrophic - hence costing more to rebuild.

If you are up to the challenge, download the service manual and do the work yourself. Several good threads on here to help out.

If you weren't having problems, replacing snap ring or wahtever the piece is from may take care of it.

Yeah, sorry about implying that anyone really wants to waste the OP's money, but ... I'm still inclined to say that if there were no problems, and continue to be no problems, I'd run with it until the very first sign of an odd noise or driveability issue - especially if there's nothing out of the ordinary to be seen inside the case.

That's a pretty small piece of metal after all. And OP, are you going to take the truck immediately out of service, or run it a little and see what happens?

Reality is...OD snap ring. Re build time. But yeah, he can run it as long as he a good pair of walking shoes or AAA to come get him when it quits working.

EDIT: I've seen that part in two 46REs, and they both quit working...It's not a matter of if, but when.

Sounds like a good plan to me. As soon as my 3-OD shift got sloppy I called PATC so I could avoid unscheduled downtime.

My guess is that the snap ring piece came from the overdrive unit and it's just a matter of time before it fills the rest of the machine with shredded metal... so you might just want to spring for a remote filter now to save the cooler from that fate.
