'96 dodge ram coolant loss.
thats the next step.took it into a garage last week, told them i suspected it needed a water pump.the mechanic preasure tested the system, visually looked for the leak and finally added dye to the system.he could not find the leak either.gotta take it back this week and hit it with a black light.i cant beleive they just didnt throw a new pump on it,must be the last honest repair shop in town.
Y'know...
2nd gen Dodges seem to be rife with mystery leaks. Sooner or later they show up, or come to light (pun intended) if you use dye.
My last big one was a radiator tank seal, manifested itself with a disgusting odor for weeks until it got big enough.
But I've also had the thermostat gasket heater core water pump radiator hose issues too. Oh..and the O ring seal around the block freeze plug heater. Almost pulled the tranny out in error.
The latest one was a bit trickier. It ended up being the lack of a clamp on the overflow hose at the radiator. Finally saw a bubble of antifreeze come out around after refilling my cooling system for the seemingly billionth time. Adding a simple pinch clamp also got rid of the bubbling noise in my heater.
I can't wait to see what goes out next. But I'm not gonna speak anything into existence.

so here i am today coming home from deer hunting and the rad boils over.3 hours from home im on the side of the highway with the hood up.loosened the rad cap off to releive preasure and added another 2 gallons of water.damn thing never lost a drop for 2 weeks then starts again.when i first popped the hood there was coolant on the passenger side of the engine, but still could not see where it was coming from.
damn im still stumped.
damn im still stumped.
so today i take it to a shop and put it up on the hoist.found some seeping between timing cover and water pump.got on the rock auto site and ordered a new pump, upper and lower hoses, timing cover gasket set, bypass hose.gonna clean garage out tomorrow and tackle this job.does the rad have to come out to do this job?also since im in this deep i might as well change timing chain and gears.do i need a special puller to get the gears off?
cheers

I was going to say to look inside at the firewall sometimes the heatercore will leak and the liquid goes under the rubber backed carpet so the carpet seems dry... but it seems your leak was in the engine compartment
yupper its in the engine compartment.gonna start ripping and tearing on sunday.
i got the garage cleaned out and the truck inside, only took 5 friggin hours lol.so it looks easier to take the rad out and gain some room.do the transmission lines require a special tool to remove or do i just undo the fitting at the rad? ive had this out before but damned if i can remember.gotta dig through the tool box and see what ive got for pullers, rarely use that stuff.thanks for everyones help, sure makes life easier and my wallet heavier.
cheers.
cheers.
