did you try disconneting the egr vac hose? sounds like a weak egr

He has a 97, so, no EGR on his truck.

yup 5.9 not a 5.2 correct me if i'm wrong but the 5.2 had a egr up to 2000?

Nope, EGR went the way of the dodo on all engines in 96.

Neither had EGR past 95.
