I've upgraded gears twice, once from stock 3.55 to 4.10, then from 4.10 to 4.56. Both times it ran about $1800 out the door (parts, labor, tax, shop fees, etc...). I used Yukon gears installed from an experienced offroad specialty shop in town that I trust.
The first one (3.55-4.10) included the install of an Auburn LSD at the same time, so that added about $400 in parts, and maybe a tiny bit to labor cost. It did not include a new carrier though because I went with a thick gear, so that saved a little money.
The second time (4.10-4.56) included the removal of a broken LSD and install of a new Auburn LSD (so definetly some added labor cost there, no new parts cost though), and I had to go with a new carrier with the 4.56's, so that was added parts cost.
You can do it yourself of course, but it definetly takes some know-how, and the result of getting it wrong will typically cost you more then just paying to have a professional do it right the first time.
