Starter issues... Maybe
Okay first post on here, read and searched alot of threads on here. I have a 98 3500 dually V10, was running and driving fine, then started to have issues of a slow start (would turn over slow for a couple of seconds then turn over normally and start) tested battery and it checks good, checked Ground at Battery and all were clean and tight. I did notice that when it would start that it would take 3-5 seconds for the voltage gauge to start registering but seemed to charge. I drove it this weekend and parked it for 3 days, went to start it to come home last night and started same way with the dragging, started, but volt gauge never came up, all other gauges worked properly and had no lights on, turned it off and tried to restart it and had to jump it to get it to start. Got it started and still no voltage by gauge and the the check gauges and abs lites were on. it would only stay running at higher rpms... I am not sure if it is just an alternator issue or because of the slow atrt prior there is another issue. I am going back to the truck today to try and see if I can get it home. any input would be greatly appreciated... It is at a hunting lease so no resources real close by...
Ouch. Bring a good set of jumper cables.....
Couple things I would check, first is alternator output..... test it with a load as well. (most parts stores will do that for ya.) Might be the whole problem. Load test the battery as well..... (don't know what test you did already.... just voltage is inadequate to the task here.)
Once you have those dealt with, do a draw test on the starter. it might be getting old and tired, and drawing too much power trying to turn over that huge engine.
Welcome to DF.

Sounds like the alt is done for, I would take a new alt and fully charged batt with you. I am not to sure how long a V10 will run on just the batt. A multi meter will tell you if the alt is working or not, should be about 13-14.5 volts at the batt when the truck is running.
I put a new battery in it the volt guage came up to 14+ and drove it the 110 miles home towing my fifth wheel without a problem, I'm assuming that the VR has to have good voltage to the PCM to kick in and do it's thing... Thanks again for the help and I'm sure I will have more questions in the future...
It doesn't bother me, gets about 8-9 mpg pulling a loaded down 33.5' Toy Hauler... It is strictly for the purpose of a tow rig and Heavy loads, I drive a VW Jetta TDI as a daily and have a Jeep Commanche for a light duty pick-up... out of the 12 vehicles at the house, everything has a purpose...
I guess I'm just jealous of your 12 vehicle garage then Haha! At least my gf has a Ferd Escape I can thief when the truck needs work. If I was closer to work I would drive my 550 Grizzly to work everyday!
