I hope somebody might know this. I just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Extended Cab (Sport Model) - 4WD - 5.9L, and I found out that it needs a new rear end. I currently have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 (Regular Cab) - 4WD - 5.9L, and I am wondering if it is possible that the rear end from it will fit into the 2001 model. The 1995 Dodge Ram rear end was actually replaced since I bought the truck new, and to my knowledge still works fine.

I called a salvage yard and they explained that the 2001 trucks have 3 different possibilities of gear ratios for the rear end of the truck, and I would need to know what gear ratio it has in order to get a replacement for it. He then told me that he had one in stock with 93,000 miles, and it would be $1000 + the old one to purchase that rear end. That's when I about had a heart attack, considering we just got done this week putting a new transmission in it. Other than these minor gozillion dollar details, the truck is in mint condition (I hope).

So, if the gear ratio of my 1995 Ram is the same as the gear ratio of the 2001 Ram (I'm not holding my breath for that one), but if it were the same, would that rear end fit into the 2001 Ram?

I did find a separate thread on a different forum where people were talking about how the 2001 model Rams had faulty rear ends (there were a lot of upset people there). That makes me think perhaps the rear ends of the 2001/1995 are not interchangeable, but I don't know...because I am clueless on this sort of thing.

P.S. Thank you to all of you for your replies. I will definitely be researching to find a better deal than 1K for this, if my old one cannot be used. I am also wondering if I do need to get one, if I should get a different model rear end than from a 2001, since I saw that that year seemed to have a lot of faulty rear ends. It would be a shame to spend many hundreds of dollars on a used one that would likely go out at any time due to original problems from that year.

 

They are both chrysler 9.25 rears. If the gear ratios are the same, it should be a fairly easy swap. I don't think much changed on the rear suspension over the years.....

 

Thank you so much for your quick answer. I have been kind of sick since I found this out, they just finished the transmission today and told me about the rear end. Maybe I'll get lucky and the ratios will match.

 

 

My '95 has a yoke on the pinion gear, but my '01 has a drive flange. If the '95 is the same cab and bed configuration the driveshaft could be swapped along with the rear, you'll have to pull the drive flange from the '01 rear and bolt it up the the '95 pinion gear.

1k for a junkyard axle is ridiculous. Find another place to do business. You should be able to find a place that will sell you the rear end for around 200 bucks, with no core return.

 

+1 on that. Find somewhere else. I was able to pick up a rear end from a well known place about an hour from me for just under 100 bucks.

 

Didn't brakes and sensors change?

 

WOW, the cost for installing a brand new eaton posi in my rearend was only 800 bucks (Parts, fluids and labor).
