Default catalytic converter question

How much of an effect does the cat have on how loud exhaust is? I put a glasspack on my truck saturday and i cranked it up while it had no muffler and it wasnt very loud. Does the cat make it very much quieter and when I take it off in the future will it be noticably louder?

Yeah a stock cat makes the machine quite a bit quieter from my experience. I had my pickup straight piped with just the cat and when I removed the cat (plugged up on me) it was WAY louder, like figure 8 race car loud. I replaced it with a magnaflow cat and its quieter than with nothing but noticeably louder compared the stock one. Seems the stock cats muffle the sound alot

I would so pull an Eddy Murphy banana on you. May just upgrade to potatoes.

You're the kind of person deserving of a citation for stupid **** like that given how inconsiderate you are to young kids' ears as well as elderly.

JM effin' O though

Pardon my manners. To answer your question, yes a Cat has an effect on the exhaust volume in addition to other components of the system.

Here is a picture of the cat that does all the chemical schtuff (for lack of technical terms).

By visual inspection, all the exhaust fumes pass through that contraption. If it were not there or shall we say a big friggin hole the diameter of the exhaust system, then what do you think the effect on sound would be?

Wh1t3Nukle FYI im not inconsiderate of young or elderly thats why I dont romp and stomp my truck when around alot of other people I have rattled the windows in my own house setting in the drive way and rattled my friends other vehicles windows either passing them or playing around. If you drive like you have some since then its not that bad you can for sure tell that it has duals on it but yes you go romping it and it is load.

exhaust diagrams:
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ram-1500s.html

94-99 cat is dual 2" in, single 2.5" out
00-01 cat is single 3" in, single 3" out <----This is yours
Not sure on length...If you're looking to buy a cat online all you have to do is type in your vehicle info on the website (summitracing, jegs, rockauto, etc.) and they'll search for the correct cat for you. So no need to worry about the sizes.

I got the y-pipe with a cat from Eastern (on rockauto.com) for $230 and just bolted the y-pipe on and clamped the cat to the y-pipe. You can go that route or just buy a dual 2" inlet cat from magnaflow (~$100) and have a muffler shop weld it to your stock pipes.
