Default 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 V6

Hello everyone I just got this truck the other day as a work truck and i have a few questions... not sure this is the correct place to ask but here it goes. I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with a V6 Magnum and the trouble that im running into is that when the transmission is cold it shifts fine but when it warms up it takes longer to shift and it shifts hard anyone have this issue or know what causes it? the truck has 144k miles on it and as soon as i hit 50 i loose all power it very hard to get it above 50. I dont know what information you will need to help you better with an answer if i left something out that you need to know let me know! any help i can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Bobby

Welcome to DF!

The transmission gurus will surely chime in here with recommendations on what to check out. You should use the search feature and I'm betting you'll come across similar symptoms. Then the guidance will be better tailored to you.

Best to add your truck specs to your signature. More readily available as people chime in.

I am not a transmission guru, but have a few suggestions.

Ist, go to the FAQ/DIY section and download a FSM if you haven't done so already. Great info and help there.

2nd, check fluid level. Vehicle in neutral with transmission warmed up. Only use AFT+4, and don't use any checmical snake oil in tranny. Let us know what you find out.

3rd, in the FSM, ther is aprocedure for adjusting the Throotle Valve cable. It is on the throttle body, passenger side, going back to rear of vehicle.

If fluid is good, and TV cable is adjusted correctly, this will give everyone a better idea about what may be the issue.

Do you know how long it has been since filter was changed? (do not take it to a shop and let them do a flush)

Ok so the first thing i did was check the fluid and because im an idiot and did not check it first it was low this whole time not even touching the dipstick it was 2qts low... now i still shift hard and high RPMs but i think i have a bad cat... when i fist start it runs great but after it warms up its like the motor cant breath and it sounds like an air compressor under my hood so being me while its warm i got under it and hit the cat with a rubber hammer and it ran good for about a mile then lost all power.... sound like a bad cat to you guys?

Probably...... wouldn't hurt to pull the front O2 sensor, and take the truck for a drive. If it runs better, you found your problem. (WILL set a code though. and be a bit loud....)

Well that seems to be the issue i took out the O2 sensor and it drove like it shoud and its shifted like it should also! didnt think a cat would cause a truck to not shift right but it did... Thanks for the help!!

The v6 has the same issue with the plenum as the v8 does. Read this thread for more info. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...um-thread.html
