180* Thermostats... Pro's and Con's..
#31
So I had my wife take her car to the local Goodyear shop yesterday to have the oil changed (I'm too busy working on my Ram to do it myself). Of course they rotate the tires, check fluids, etc.
So she calls me (ready for this, unregistered?) and says that John told her the WIPER BLADES are starting to fall apart and wants to know what type I want to put on! (grinning....)

I'm running the Trico Neoform wipers on my Mazda and my Crown Victoria. Great wipers and great prices. They even throw freebies in the box as well!

So has anyone tested the theory that you get worse fuel mileage with a 180 t-stat and stock tune versus a 195 t-stat and stock tune? It would seem to me if someone real world tested the two different temp thermostats and the fuel mileage remained the same, there would be no advantage to keeping the stock thermostat, other than it might take longer for the cab to heat up. Possibly someone with a tuner and a 180 could go back to the stock tune and compare their mileage to what they were getting with say the 87 tune. And for the record, I have a 192 thermostat, so I guess I'd be a poor test subject. Maybe someone could write MythBusters a letter about thermostats in Dodge trucks. They could do a whole show. No one would watch it but us.

I have my results using the 180* Stat
Fuel = 87 Octane
95% in town driving = 8.57 mpg
100% HWY = 11.17 mpg
Elevation = 100 ft.
I have now installed the 195* Stat.
100% Town driving = 10.58

Your gas mileage with the 180 looks a little low (assuming stock tire size, yadda, yadda). I'm getting about 12.5 mpg mixed (65 hwy/35 city) with 5.9, auto, 4 X 4, 265 tires, stock t-stat (well 192) and stock tune.
Z- man is right, I should really update my signature to avoid typing all that info over and over. He may give me sass for it.

the part that I don't get, is that the 'stfc' doesn't start adjusting until the temperature reaches 175* or so.. what's the term? Latency maybe? It may be the computer I'm using having lag time (latency?) between it and the PCM, but I don't think it is, because I see other things real time- like an area of cooler or hotter air as I drive through it.. I think the o2's take over at 175~180*..
I don't know this next bit is a fact, but I highly suspect if I were running the factory tune (death flash and all), the o2's wouldn't take the con until 190~195*..

Ok but I'm thinking something else has to be wrong with your truck because I have 35" tires and 4.56 gears and get better mileage with my 180 stat....I'm not sure on the city mileage but I get just over 13mpg highway the last time I calculated...

Could the IAT or 02 have an effect ?
