Im sorry to take over this thread but its a related question..

What would be the signs of a failing torque converter, because im having a heated debate over this on the Jeepforums i post on often.. This guy keeps insiting my issue (I get thuds or vibration from 3rd-od) is my torque converter..

Im 100% positive it isnt, because

A. when the converter locks in OD it doesnt make a peep.
B. When it locks in 3rd with OD off it doesnt make a peep.
C. it unlocks and locks when i let off the gas and push the gas again without a issue.
D. It unlocks and locks when i press the brakes while on the gas and then release the brakes..

It makes no issues at all, and A-D i thought are the tests you do to check if its the converter or something else am I right ? But he will not stop saying its the converter from the 3rd-OD shift.. makes no sense at all too me..

Specially when my issue went away after i re-routed my spark plug wires and unplugged my battery for 24 hours.. Its been 7 days now and the issue is still gone.

Yep. It's still the torque converter. You are just in denial. Face it, your truck is still doing it, you are just ignoring it. Denial. NOT just a river in Egypt.

What you describe sounds exactly like what my truck would do when TCC engaged and I had a couple wires mis-routed. MAJOR shake..... felt like the truck was going to fall apart.

In the FSM check the diagnosis tables and charts in the diagnosis and testing section of of the 46re transmission. it lists possible causes and corrections for the draging or lock up condition.

A flow check could be performed to test the pump, if you think it may be the culprit. it appears to affect the converter clutch dragging according to the diagnosis chart.

A converter stall test could be performed to see if you get abnormal results.

Good luck with finding the issue.

My truck does something like this as well. Driving under normal conditions (changes at about 2500) with od truned off which is most of the time, it change 1-2 perfect but when it changes from 2-3 it does with the tcc locked. If I speed up to 40 and let off it changes up perfect and then give it the gas the tcc engages just right. If I accelerate hard ( changes at about 4500) it will change from 1-2 2-3 and then the tcc engages perfect. With od turned on it changes thru all the gears perfect with proper tcc engagment. I put in new solenoiods but it made no difference. Code 37 (something to do with the tcc) comes up when I turn the key on and off but according to the haynes manual this code does not apply to my year of truck. Fluid and filter is always perfect when I change it. This probaly has nothing to do with this issue but code 12 is always there as well. The battery has not been disconnected for the last year or more.

My '96 was doing this.

When the torque converter went into lock-up, it was a violent slam whether the O/D was on or off. It also didn't matter if it was cold or warm. Always did it.

Also, it got to the point where when I put the truck in gear, it would shut off a lot of times. Reverse or Drive.

Put a new Torque Converter in, and both problems went away.

Seeing how mine is a 96 also and sounds like the EXACT same problem. My question is how long ago did you do this and has your tranny shown any issues since? I would sure like to be able to get away with just a t/c change but I am just afraid it may have trashed the tranny in the process.

No issues since, but I rebuilt the tranny about 60k miles ago.
