So my best bet would be go out to a junk yard. Get the entire wiring from a 97 dodge cummins. Buy the engine I'd rebuild it. Buy the tranny and mounts. What else? Give me an idea on the money it would take with all junk yard stuff

Prices depend a lot on where you are..... call around, and see if you can even FIND a cummins in a yard..... ask 'em how much they want for it. I would have to go to detroit to even have a small hope of finding one, and prices are around 1500 bucks for a 200,000 mile motor......

Even if you can find everything on the cheap, if you include the price tag on all the individual parts, add what you value your time in life spent on the conversion, and compare it to what you would spend on a 2nd gen with a Cummins with the same mileage. I would have to think it would be so much cheaper and less time wasted to just buy the truck that came from the factory. Correct if Im wrong, but just seems sensible. Im not doubting your mechanical skills but trying to save you a few bucks and headaches

The problem comes when you add weight along with that torque. Pushing around an empty truck all the time I wouldn't think twice about it.

Ya I would think the frame wouldn't like the torque only if there was a heavy load that makes a lot of sense. Which I am not doing anyways, honestly the only reason I want to put a cummins in it is because I want to learn more about them before I go to school to be a diesel mechanic next year.

Youre best bet there wouldbe soak up all the knowledge you can. When you graduate, you should know more than the average person and will be able to pick up the whole truck on the cheap if it has any problems with the engine. Then you will know how to fix it yourself and have a million mile Cummins.

Buy a truck with a cummins already in there.

Also, do not swap a 5.2 for a 5.9. The 5.2 responds better to pretty much anything. Mainly because the cam is better.

It is a higher compression engine. I liked my 5.2 better than my 5.9.

Let me ask you something about the 5.2l, I bought my truck a year ago, only 163k miles, always oil changes, everything. When you matted it at a dead stop how did it respond? and how was your power wise? When I matt mine, I hear this sound like its being chocked then it speeds up, then it shift's, then bam im outta there. But I honestly cannot spin my tires at a dead stop. Never have been able to anywhere. Unless its wet.

Have you fixed your plenum yet? Some of the side effects are crapped over O2 sensors and clogged catalytic converters, which can screw with engine performance.
