Instead of doing a cam, and digging that deep into the motor..... (well, if you do the plenum, and timing chain, you are most of the way there anyway...... but....) have a look at the harland sharp 1.7 roller rockers. The non-adjustable guys are a simple bolt on, with no custom tuning required. (which can't really be said for a cam change.....) The rockers will make the engine "think" the cam is bigger, but, won't **** off the PCM.

A good number of members run them, and I haven't really seen any complaints. The run in the neighborhood of 300 bucks, about the same as a cam...... a LOT easier to install though, and more "computer friendly".

Basically, what it does is increase valve lift, more duration at .050 lift, allowing the engine to breath a bit better, which is what its all about anyway.

 

I wish I could just rebuild the whole engine but its my only vehicle at the moment..

There is truth to that. The 5.2 camshaft has higher lift than the 5.9. SO if you put 1.7 roller rockers you get more valve lift than you would get with a 5.9.

I would rule against a camshaft, but if you want to get a camshaft, PM the OP of this thread. He is also a member here. He can get you the specs of the RV cam he used.

Basically, with a RV cam, some iron Ram heads, underdrive crank pulley, Spectre air filter, new timing chain, and 1.6 roller rockers (Would not want to add to the lift of that cam on a 5.2L for piston-valve clearance) you can get almost the HP of a hemi and gobs more torque. Oops, you would need a custom tuner.

But that would set you back about 2500 dollars.

If you are interested in a cam, his RV cam is a good camshaft and he can point you in the right direction. He also has underdrive crank pulleys for sale at good prices.

I would start with the plenum plate and tune. If you want more, get the 50mm throttle body. If you want more than that get the 1.7s. After that, I would get headers and upgrade your exhaust before you get a camshaft. But by then you are talking about 1500 bucks THEN doing a camshaft. With a camshaft you are talking:
1. New lifters (I would get rhoades lifters)
2. Hardened pushrods
3. Camshaft itself
4. 1.6 roller rockers: I would not use 1.7s with a 5.2 engine

BUT, since your 5.2 already has a higher lift than a 5.9, you should be pleased with the 1.7s. Stick with the bolt ons.

A camshaft should be the last thing you do. Not just because it is not an easy job, but because you can see how your truck responds to mods. If you put a camshaft into a vehicle where the engine could not handle it, you are not going to be happy with the results.

It would be easier to post your budget, then we could tell you what to do. But EVERYONE here will tell you "Plenum plate kit and tune" for starters. From there it is an adiction that you will never get rid of. For me, it started with my 1996 5.2. Then I got a 2001 5.9 (off road edition) and that is when i "really" started getting into my engine. I say "really" because I never trusted myself to do a job like the plenum plate. Then I felt dumb because it is a pretty simple job even for a beginner.
