Welcome back! Thanks for your service big dog.

Check this link out to get the full factory service manual for your year.

If you got skills, then yes you can rebuild the transmission. There are some great threads around here where people have documented their rebuild. You most likely have a 46RE.

I went ahead and did search in the DIY/FAQ subforum for you on "transmission" which will give lots of good topics for you on the rebuild notion.

There will be other smarter people guiding you here. To better give ppl a more pertinent responses, add your truck information to your Signature (User CP >> Edit Signature).

A selection of folks here have rebuilt their own transmissions. gdstock, j415, Rocky Mountain Ram, (don't remember his exact username.... his thread is still around though.) I don't think any of these guys had previous transmission experience. J415 has a thread in the faq section with links to some walkthru's, and other good resources for the DIYer. On page six of MonteC's trans corner, is a list he gave another member for a 'towing' rebuild. (basically, a STOUT trans...) I have an annotated list, with actual part names if you want it, just PM me your email address, and I can send you a copy. It has prices, but, they are prolly a bit out of date by now.

If you plan on replacing the electronics, you can use just about any 96 or later 46RE. The governor body changed at some point, so, that is something you need to bear in mind as well. Best bet would be getting one out of a 2000, or 01 truck. (and it MUST come out of a 4x4......)

Borg Warner? (I think) also makes a heavy duty governor pressure solenoid, and maybe sensor...... that are cheaper than doing the GM conversion.

Welcome to DF!

Thank You for your service.
