Yes, thx. The code reader is a good idea. What's the skinny on those? I've priced them and they're anywhere from $60-$200.

 

With your truck, I would actually recommend getting an SCT tuner. Not only can it read/clear codes, and display various other data, it also can reprogram your PCM to dispose of torque management, and help your engine run MUCH better. They run 265.00 for the tuner, and three tunes.

 

search "ELM327" on youtube and ebay... you'll find all your answers... there are a couple threads kicking around here on them too... they just plug into your OBD port and sent everything either wirelessly (bluetooth) or through usb cable... the really old ones used serial cables to a laptop. theres lots of free software for pc's that work with them or if you have an andriod you can use a free app called "torque" the $5 paid version add bells and whistles like 1/4 mile times and HP output...

 

So...I bought an OBD II code reader & it gave me a code to replace the Temp Control Sensor. $15 part. As I was messin' aroung w/that I touched the exposed wires to the alternator & yes I am ashamed & embarassed to say it blew my ECM. Not completely apparently. I found an outfit (AES) outta Jacksonville, FL who will repair or rebuild it for me for a bit cheaper than buying a new one. So...once that's fixed & reinstalled, would all my previous problems go away w/the replacement of that TCS?

That isn't auto computer exchange is it? If it is, they have a HORRID rep.

 

If it is them, based on what I have read, I would chance one from a JY and SCT tune before buying from auto computer exchange. Just get the same year model as yours.

The tech heard my story & felt that because my Code reader was still reading codes from the system then my ECM is not completely burned out. He save me over 60 bucks to repair/rebuild as oppose to buying another one.
