Steering shaft lock upside down
Hello all,
Yesterday I had the steering column out of my 1997 RAM 1500 automatic, to install the "Rock Solid" steering bushing fix. When it came time to reinstall the column, I found the steering shaft lock to only work in upside down position. After some searching, I've found others report the same symptom, but, no suggestions on what went wrong or how to fix.
Any ideas?

Not to be argumentative - but normal? When I took the column out, it was locked at the 12 o'clock position. Following the directions of the Rock Solid bushing, I released the lock to test the fit of the bushing and feel of steering. I then focused on the repair at hand, without concern for the shaft lock. Apparently that was a mistake. It didn't relock and now only locks at 6 o'clock position.
Looks like I'll be taking it apart today. :-/

I'm pretty sure you'd be the first person that owns a Ram that the wheel locks at 12 oclock position. (unless of course you rotate it) . Besides removing negative battery cable, the first thing you need to do is use a rope or wire to keep the wheel from turning at all.
LOL, after thoroughly wasting my time, I found you are right, it is "normal". Could have sworn it was right side up before having to unlock it to do testing. Shows how memory isn't very good for things that weren't initially considered important.
At least I know how the whole mechanism works now.
Thanks.

I have the same issue with my Durango. After replacing the steering gearbox my steering locks 180. I removed the steering wheel and both switches and learn that the lock is a solid mechanical detent. And the steering wheel only goes on the shaft one way. However, I thought for sure the wheel locked at 12 0'clock.
To clarify, does the wheel suppose to lock at 12 o'clock? If so, is there an adjustment?

The lock doesn't engage until the wheel is turned 180 degrees
