Default Water Pump Remove Help

I'm removing my water pump to replace it since the thing is shot. I've never messed with this before and can't get the fan and fan-drive off of the pulley. Other online instructions don't help at all. Any advice on how to get the dang fan drive off??

Leave the serp belt ON. Get a big wrench, either crescent wrench, or pipe wrench. Put it on the 'nut' that screws onto the water pump snout. SMACK the end of the wrench with a big *** hammer, to get it to break loose.

Damn, I hear you. I had trouble with that too. I got one of the loner tools from auto zone but the only one that fit was warped- so it slipped right off. On top of that the haynes manual says 36 but thats horse **** Because the 36 was two big on mine. I ended saying **** it and took it off with the fan clutch and fan still on. I than put it in a vise also C-clamped the pulley and water pump. than stuck a screw driver in between the pulley and pump. Thats when i hit it with a 12 inch adj. wrench and got the fan clutch to put on the new water pump. I would do as heyyou suggested and also invest in a big 12 inch adj. wrench.

36mm combination wrench and universal pulley holder, NAPA P/N 3900 (or SRV3900). The pulley holder is about the best twenty bucks I've spent all year.

Yep I got the pulley holder deal as pictured above. In the past I've also taken a few long bolts that fit into the holes and put a prybar between them to hold it from moving. Then had to use a breaker bar to break the nut loose.

I also used a bolt inserted into one of the holes and used a prybar. But I need to get one of those super duper spanners like Unregisterd has - if I don't get it now, I'll be kicking myself the next time I need it.

all you really need is a monkey wrench thats long enough to fit over the fan shroud and hit it with a hammer thats how i got my new one off. My old fan clutch the bolt was striped and everytime I tryed to get the bolt off it just kept spinning so I had to cut it with a torch to get the fan from the fan clutch.\

i couldn't get my fan off either, so i unbolted the water pump with the fan still attached, then lifted out water pump, fan, shroud all at once.

after that, i put the water pump in the vise and removed the fan.

Thanks guys. I couldn't find a pulley holder anywhere and whackin the wrench with a hammer didn't help, so I took the assembly out as a whole. At the automotive shop down the street, they took an air-chisel and broke it lose that way. SO for future reference: stuck fan + air chisel = problem solved.
