Default Stock Air intake

okay so people say that dodge rams come with pretty much a stock cold air intake because the plastic tube runs to the fender....look real close and the tube does run to the fender, but that fender is closed off for the most part therefore wen u put the pedal to the floor your not getting as much air as you can be, i did redneck tuning to mine to get more air that is cold i will upload pics...take a look and see what you think

match up the colors to where the plastic would fit blue is where the is alot less air available and orange is where there is more...

If you remove the plastic fender skirt you can see that there is more air available than you may think.

Looks like a pretty good idea.. Have you drove it and tested results yet?

inside where the blue line is actual quit sealed off i picture it as trying to suck air out of a milk jug that has a couple of pencil size holes in u have air for a short amount of time then you have to start sucking air from little holes...just my theory..

The biggest limiter is the actual flow that goes through the box. Get a cloth air filter and it will make a world of difference.

It is all about getting CFMs past the air filter, and cloth filters allow that. The size of the end will really not make a difference.

Think of it this way. If you have a drinking straw that has a 4 inch opening on one end and a regular sized opening at the other end, there is not going to be any more flow through the end of that straw than a regular drinking straw.

The "cold air filters" that you buy for all that money really just improve performance because the conical filters have more surface area and filter more air per second than the stock sized filter.

You will see that there is not much difference between an aftermarket cold air intake than there is with the stock box with a cloth filter (Spectre or K&N). But people swear by cold air filters because they were using paper filters in their stock box before getting the CAI.

The BEST thing to get is the K$N Xtream air filter that is a 14x3 with the built in air filter element in the lid. That is pretty much like running with a bare throttle body (Which will give you the most power other than a functional ram air at 60+ MPH, although your engine will get dirty very fast).

i was just gonna get a spectre air filter to replace the stock one, i was just trying to point out that that plastic tube runs to a place were there is limited air...and if u kept all the stock plastic intake stuff and put alot better breathing air filter( spectre or K@N) then my little theory would make more sense

I'd stick to that mod you did on the OEM tube(great idea), use a filter like CPTAFW163 stated and don't waste money on the Spectre.
