Default real quick plenum question.

okay so everyone always sais look for a pool or a puddle of oil in the back of the intake, to determine if the plenum gasket has failed, so i took off my throttle body a few minutes ago, and i definately have some oil, but probably only about 1/16-1/8" deep, and only in the very rear most part of the intake. Is the plenum shot? okay peeps, lets see who can respond first....ready....set....go, lol

I have the same thing, but not that much oil. You will get a little oil from the PCV. But my question is how much? Or is that a sign of a defective PCV valve, even if it rattles?

if there is any oil in your intake manifold, the gasket is shot. there doesnt have to be much in there. when i did mine i had a real thin oil film in there and when i took the manifold off the gasket was destroyed. its not difficult to fix it just takes a little while to get everything removed and out of the way. when you go to replace the gasket, replace the plate and bolts holding it there. hughesengines.com has a complete kit to do it.

125,000... i have read everything on the site, and i fully understand the plenum, i was just curious if what seems to be a small amount of oil, is enough oil to definately call it(plenum gasket) bad.

with just a small amount of oil in it, it might be normal. im not too sure. its hard to say with only 125k. most of the time when people find oil pooling in the manifold, its more of a confirmation that the gasket it bad. usualy there are other symptoms like missing, chugging under load, loss of power ect.. but like i said its easy to do as long as you have time to do it. if by chance the gasket is still good, its still not a bad idea to replace it along with the new plate and the whole works just as a precaution. if the gasket hasnt gone out yet, it WILL if you leave the stock plate in.

If it is pooling at 1/16th to 1/8th inch, your plenum is more than likely shot. I just replaced mine, I have a film of oil in my intake (a tiny film) but that is from the PCV valve.

To replace the plenum...go to this post

less that 1000? is that a typo or do you just not drive it much? and more than likely if the gaskets are new its the PCV. make sure its motor oil though. ive heard of people having brake fluid sucked into the manifold from the brake booster.
