This thread has pretty much ALL the info you need about the oil pan.

Default 2000 Dodge Ram Van

I just had my rear main seal replaced and oil pan gasket. Van was leaking oil on ground dripping down where engine and trans mounts. Cost was $547 and of course it came with an oil change. It is still leaking oil from same area. I took it back to the shop waiting to hear from them. I was first told it could be oil sending unit- by a mechanic- before i took it to shop for diagnosis and repairs. Van has a little over 90,000 miles and I just had one freeze plug replaced then right after that the oil leak problem started. As soon as I hear from shop I will post their reason why it is still leaking oil. I am so tired of getting taken by repair shops I hope they get it right. Anyone know why it would still be leaking oil after they diagnosed and did repairs?

Wait to hear what they say, but I'd think they either diagnosed it wrong and the oil is coming from somewhere else, or they screwed up the install. A van is pretty easy to see the culprits of an oil leak at the back of the motor coming from higher up. Sending unit, distributor, intake gasket, valve covers. It needs to be cleaned real good.(to see where it's coming from) And are you sure it's oil and not tranny fluid?

For me; oil dripping from the bottom of the bellhousing, and blowing back over the transmission (and everything else), was the valley gasket at the back of the keg.

Still waiting..they have not checked it yet...I am sure it is oil, been checking it since it started leaking, I even crawled up underneath it to take a look for myself before it went in the shop and after repairs...The fluid that is leaking now at same place it was before repairs is a whole lot clearer and cleaner....smells like oil and looks like oil..If it was tranny fluid I am assuming it would be of different color..I was smelling the oil burning after driving it..I also noticed- prior to repairs- that the oil gauge was climbing real high upon starting it but after warming up it would go back to 40 and slightly below...I initially thought my oil pump was going bad...also there was a strange low engine knock upon starting the van when it was cold..But I guess me being a female I am between a rock and a hard place...I can't wait to see the outcome of this one...

Yea it was a big mess underneath...dripping dead center and blowing on everything under there...When I noticed it leaking again- right after rear main seal replacement and oil pan gasket- I seen where they cleaned it up real nice and still leaking from same area but fluid is much clearer in color...fresh oil..

Take it back. Have them fix it right. There should be no charge. Don't let them feed you some snow-job about "leaking from someplace else".

The rear main really isn't that hard to do....... wonder how they screwed it up.

Went and picked it up today....they said it was ready and found oil drain plug to be leaking and replaced seal.....I have since cleaned it up around the oil pan where it was dripping from ...took it for a little ride and set a piece of cardboard underneath it....let it sit for sometime and just went out and checked....so far so good, no leak and they didn't charge me. I'm still in disbelief but time will tell.
