I went to visually check the bottom bearing while I still had light.


The #4 bearing is nicked from the cam removal, but also galling that was already present. I presume this is the partial source of the scuffing. I say partial b/c discoloration on bearing surface is typically indicative of a temperature change.

#3 looked better but still galling at oiling hole. Same for #2 and #1.

Note that embarking on this cam change I was prepared for show stoppers. This definitely is one. I am partially pissed off, but also relieved. Relieved that it was caught prior to the galling making a formal introduction to my life.

I wonder if there is enough room to swap the bearings now or should I yank the engine out. I have access to a hoist and stand.

really no need to upgrade the computer?, I like it, what is the part number, maybe a link? do you need a computer change for bigger cams, or never?

First I would make sure that you can actually do them from the front..... (no need to yank the engine if you don't have to....)

If you can, I would definitely change them. (new cam... new bearings.....)

Depends on the cam bearing that is scored. I did the number 3 bearing from the front with the engine still in the truck. IIRC, the ac condenser may need to be pulled if it's number four.

Can't remember if i posted the thread here, but i know it's over at bionicdodge under thread name: "cam swap, advice appreciated" or something close to that.

Bearing surface will always wear before the cam surfaces. those bearings are really soft. And as stated before, make sure the oiling hole is dead nuts on before you beat the new bearing in. Make sure you don't lose the old bearing in the oil Pan when you beat it out, or you'll be pulling that too. Stuff some rags underneath and behind it.

Aim: Do you have any info about roller cam bearings? Have you ever used them? I have part numbers and sizes just not to sure if it would be compatible with the oiling system, I don't see any oil holes drilled in there case. Something like below.

Don't use them then. I really would not trust it without the oiling hole. It might be that the old roller cams had a oiling channel in them. I know the old RT +10 cam i had actually had oiling channels in it along the bearing surfaces, even though the stock cam and the comp cam i replaced it with did not.

I don't know if there was a change in bearing diameter between the magnum and LA blocks, but why risk it?

Oh, that type of bearing, didn't see the pic before, guess it didn't load. not sure how much oil actually gets the the cam in the dodge while it's operating, might screw with the oil pressure if tolerances aren't right, i know that happens when crank bearings get excessive tolerance.

as thin as those bearings are, i don't know how they could make roller bearings for the magnum, unless the cam tunnel was opened up.

Ok thanks for looking again, I have found them ranging in size from 48mm,50mm and 60mm for journal dia and one kit that matchs the specs below. I will continue doing some more reseach then. Thanks one more time for your time.

(1.998- 1.999 in)

(1.951 - 1.952 in)

No. 5 39.637 - 39.662 mm
(1.5605 - 1.5615 in)
