ok, so beyond the oil pump i just took off and the little i know about the rear main seal, thats all i know about what im looking at. please bare with me, i have a huge ability to comprehend and learn things quick. someone said something about a connecting rod, so i googled it. i found this picture im posting. through looking at the picture i came to the conclusion that the picture is what im looking at under/above (which ever) my oil pan just not assembled.

do the connecting rods go in between those disk that are cut like (halfmoons?)?.
I also counted the connecting rods and there where 8 in the picture, is there one per cylinder?
if so i should have 8 and i looked at all those because the first thing i noticed was the nuts on them on my truck with the pan off. all the ones on my truck look like they have nuts.
i know engines rotate, is there something that could be sitting on top that doesnt have a nut (obviously something missing a nut) what i mean is could i or should i mainly rotate the engine, would that reveal a different part of the engine componets that i could inspect for a missing nut???

The connecting rods are the long pieces with 1 largehole and 1 small hole. The large hole is were it connects to the crank. Small hole for the piston. There are 2 nut on each connecting rod. Just use a flashlight to look at them all and make sure they are all there. There are no nuts at the piston side.

sweet ok. i figured thats how they connect but didnt know if there was nuts on top.
im really thinking that this may be the perfect time with no other option than to do my plenum. that way i can inspect the top of the engine too..... it just a really crappy time. my wifes van is still acting up because it needs a new fuel pump. this shuts down both our rides and we both have jobs

If all your rod cap nuts are there...... it prolly found it's way in there during some previous work. If you had a loose rod cap, you WOULD hear it, and it would be unmistakable...... There isn't anywhere else it could have come from INSIDE the engine though.... so, if all the nuts are on the rods, don't worry about it.

I like your answer best... You just made me feel so much better. i went outside and checked all the nuts on the rod caps and they are all there. the only thing i can think of is when i did my timing chain gasket, but when i did that everything was acounted for.... things that make you go hhhmmmmmm...

Maybe it just spontaneously occurred in your oil pan?

Does the nut look like it's been exposed to the elements? If so, it's from the outside of your rig somewhere.

are you the person that dropped a nut into the engine when you had the intake off?
