Hello, I need tips on how to get better gas milage on my 2001 1500 with a 390. I know it's not a gas saver by no means, but da economy has decline in recent years. After i fill up with gas the digital gauge tells me that i only have a fuel range of, give or take 300 miles, it use to read higher than that. I hav changed all plugs, wires, rotor and cap, just for starters. Knock on wood it's a smooth running truck. I haven't had problems with an o2 sensor yet. But is it worth it to change it in hopes of a economy gain? And I've also wanted to change out the headers for some better flowing after markets.

are you sure about that? could be a stroked engine.

 

First what is your mpg. The average is about 10-12 mpg.

Ways to help.

1. Drive within reason, speed wise.
2. Properly inflated tires.
3. Make sure truck is tuned up. Wires, plugs, air filter(big reason for mpg loss)
4. Bigger tires will decrease your MPG

There are tons more. Just search around. Don't pay attention to miracle fluids or devices that say they can add mpg and cost $19.99.

 

OP stated ~300 mile range, so assuming 26 gal tank (can't remember) = ~11.5 mpg.

personally I only had 2 tanks on it...so can't speak to the results

Thanks, guys. I do try to keep up with the maintenance as good as I can. I do clean da k&n filter that I hav in it about twice a year. Even tho it is a k&n filter it is still in the stock location. I do have bigger than stock tires, when I went to get new tires they didn't hav da size that was on the truck, so I got a set that was slightly larger.

 

My last comment is still correct. That link you posted isn't for something that promises a MPG gain. It's to clean your system.

 

Try cleaning your filter more than once every 6 months, maybe do that every few months, especially if you live in a dusty area or drive on gravel roads a lot.

 

+1 depending on where you live bigger tires dont necesarrily mean bad mileage. again within reason. florida is flat...EVERYWHERE. i go easy on the gas and my old 265/70/17's got me at most 22mpg out my 2wd 5.2L. Highway cruise control, etc. with my 33s i recently got 13mpgs city. you could lose your tailgate for a mesh one. basically every extra 100lbs in/on the truck is 1 mpg. the mesh tailgate keeps basically the same aerodynamics but loses the weight of the tailgate itself. if you have a toolbox that you dont absolutely need...lose it. extra crap in your cab lose it. it sounds like you take care of the engine so thats not that big of a problem, i havent done anything but change the oil and fix broken stuff. no tuneups for almost 75k miles. I couldnt afford it until recently. And get aluminum rims-lighter than stock. I heard somewhere that the rotating mass of heavy rims iis like having something that weighs twice as much in the bed.
