Default Where is the Check Engine light located??

I know this sounds like a dumb question, I spent a while trying to find out even downloaded the service manual. I recently purchased a 1997 dodge ram 5.2 4x4. Went to smog it (live in so cal) and the MIL light is not coming on. I have the high line cluster according to the service manual. The cluster with the tach and such. In the service manual it tells you where the MIL light is at on the low line cluster (no tach) but not on the high line. So can someone please tell me where its at so when I tear apart the dash tonight I know where to look on the cluster. Thanks!

Should be in the lower right of the tach.

You should also be able to tell which one it is when you take it out because it's usually black instead of clear. I'm pretty sure they're 194 bulbs, so just take those ones out til you find the burnt out one.

i'm not sure if it's only '98 and up, but you can try:

hold the tripometer button down while you turn the key on (but don't start).. there may or may not be a C code built in test (BIT) for all your chassis electronics.. during the test, all you dash lights illuminate.. you'll see it for sure then..

Thanks for the answers guys, I will let you know if I run into any problems.

drewactual, thanks Ill try that too. Ive read that you should be able to read check engine codes by switching the key on and off three times in a row and the codes will be displayed on the odometer, but my odometer is not digital. Good thing I have a OBD scanner.

yup.. you can do that for P codes, but what I speak of is C Codes.. I've no idea what P stands for unless it's Problem, but the C is for Chassis..

P is for powertrain.

His is a 97, so, none of the c codes apply. (that I am aware of.)

Hey guys while I'm on here I was also trying to find out what type of transmission I have. Is it a 42RE or 46RE. I read that the 42RE was for Dakota's only but I am a little confused. Also Since I have 4x4 will there be a problem if I get a 2WD transmission.

I am having some transmission issues, my Dad said it seems like a hydraulic pressure issue. When driving it feels like the truck is hesitating back and forth a bit. The motor is good, no problems at idle or in park. The fluid is nasty and overfilled. I am going to change the filter and fluid see if it helps (cheaper than used transmission). Just wondering what I need to get if I need to replace the transmission. Can I get a 2WD transmission? If so from what year, etc. Thanks again!

edit: sorry I forgot to mention its a dodge ram 1500

welcome to df.

2wd trans does not interchange with 4wd.

V6 has 42Rx. V8 has 46Rx.
later models are RE with electronic control of OD and TC shifts. old models 94-95-? are RH hydraulic control.

be careful on years of interchange. i don't know the specifics, but 96-97ish have one wiring harness. 98 and up have another. 00-01 might?? have another.

if RE, you can unplug your harness and count the pins and draw a picture of it. don't get anything that doesn't match it or your PCM won't control it properly.

last - use the control panel to fill out your signature or truck info with year, engine, etc or everyone will flame you.
