That extra lip might be part of the manufacturing process, and doesn't serve any actual purpose. If you look from the Rockauto catalog, Fel-Pro and Apex have same design, whereas Mahle and Victor Reinz have symmetrical desing wihtout that lip.
I realize I'm quoting from five years ago but I'm doing a '99 now. I happened to order both Victor Reinz and Mahle. The Mahle now has the assymetrical design as well.
Not saying it's good or bad ‐‐ just useless trivia. The Mahle seems to have thicker rubber so I'm opting for those this time. Thicker may not be better but Mahle tends to make good stuff.
