Hot gear oil smell from left rear wheel (99 2500)
Just a thought here since you mentioned odd breaking feel, is to just pull the wheel, pull the drum and look at the brake cylinder.
It's possible that you have brake fluid leaking from the cylinder onto the shoes. If that is the case, then you've got to replace both. Cylinder is cheap though and shoes...a step up. Check your brake fluid level up in the bay too.
Just a thought to at least rule out as it's a common situation.

Here is a link for one of the Dana parts books, pdf page 72 it should help you out.

The socket they specify is just a big *** socket. If you try and buy it from dodge, they will want both arms and a leg. Find out what size it is, and go to the parts store and see if you can get one. They may even know what size.....
Didn't have any help or access to air tools this weekend so I haven't done anything yet. I did however pop the cover off the diff and drained some nasty looking oil out. Very foamy. No metal pieces or anything disconcerting, ring gear and pinion looked good. I swear some of the fluid was on the verge of becoming ice (water in the diff I suspect).
I wonder if the smell I'm detecting is actually coming from the vent hose. I noticed while under there that the vent hose off the rear axle runs on the left side up beside the bed side. Maybe that's where I'm picking up the odor? No leakage out of the drums of gear oil like you would normally see, and the level wasn't low IMO.
