Front Brakes Cookin' (Help)
Oh man really? The rears!! Well, you gotta take the victories in any way, right?
Have you thought about self-adjusting them at all? In case you don't know or other ppl don't (which I learned here from Vdub and Zman), you go in reverse about 15 mph and slam the brakes. Give yourself a good half a block.
btw, the picture is awesome, but I'm not recognizing the area. Probably not in my regular area.

The area is Old Foresthill Road just below Mamoth Bar in Auburn.
They won't self adjust if they're really bad out of adjustment. They won't on a 94 chevrolet, anyway. Just found that out about a week ago putting rear shoes on one. Odd thing is, when I got that truck, they had the rear brakes disabled (had a pair of vise grips pinching the rear rubber line closed), and I drove that truck probably 200 miles with front brakes only and they never got hot enough to smoke. But, if adjusting the rears fixed your problem, glad you got it fixed.
I feel stupid for not suggesting adjusting the rears. The self adjusters suck and don't work very well. You have to do a lot of reverse driving and slamming the pedal once in a while after you get them close. Even the manuals tell you to adjust them manually at certain intervals. Download the free FSM and get a Haynes, for more info on when they say to do it. I'm pretty sure it's every 3 or 5 thousand miles, like oil change time.
Just a quick Update:
Installed new 3500 rear wheel cylinders today, direct easy bolt on and only $22.00 total.
Also my cylinders where just starting to get ready to leak.
Took it for a test run.
1: Normal driving the truck does stop better and the brakes overall feel better.
2: Hard braking in town was good, no front or rear lock up, Anti-Loc worked.
3:Took on a dirt road and applied the brakes fairly hard and was able to get the rears to start locking up, RWAL was working.
4: Down the Canyon, first stretch no abnormal smell.
Next Canyon which works the brakes harder, at the very end pulled over to check and had some heat smell but not to bad, I was working the brakes fairly hard.
So in conclusion:
This is a very worth whole Mod
