Governor pressure sensor
I was just browsing through the DIY section and reading up on the 46re. I've been having issues with OD so I was reading MonteC's transmission thread and I now have a question about the governor pressure sensor.
MonteC
I changed the filter and fluid last week and also cleaned the pressure sensor and solenoid. But my question is this: I have a 2001 and it has the metal sensor not the plastic one. If the 01 uses the plastic one and the metal one isnt compatible with my computer what would be the issues? Would this affect OD or just the timing of the shifts themself? I don't have any shifting problems just no OD.
MonteC
The governor pressure sensor or transducer needs to be matched to the computer. The transducer not only senses governor pressure but has a temp sensor also. The different sensors are not compatible to different computers.
A 96-99 should have the round metal sensor, 00/01 should have the black plastic sensor.

How many miles on truck? How long have you had it? I assume that this is the first time you have been into tranny? When did you start having OD issues? What is the tranny fluid look/smell like when you changed and how much garbage was in pan around the magnet?
I know - lots of questions.
Also, the OD and TCC are controlled by a set of solenoids near the governor sensor and governor solenoid. I would recommend removing the OD solenoid and cleaning.

he has already mentioned he found a broken snap ring in his other thread... thats likely why he has no overdrive...(I think you in denial PapaG
) the gov pressure problems result in slow / late or no shifting past 1st gear when in limp home mode...

166,400 miles. I've had it about 3 weeks now. OD hasn't worked since I got it except for right after I bought it I was running up interstate and it kicked into overdrive just fine (no noise, etc) but hasn't worked since then. As far as the fluid I don't think it had been changed in a while and it smelled a little burnt but more like old fluid as opposed to that acrid burnt smell. The magnet had a film of junk around it probably 3/32" thick. I did find a very small piece of a snap ring too.
Yeah I checked out the OD/TCC solenoid but didn't have the time that day to drop the valve body to get it out and clean it. I'm actually thinking this may be my problem. Another question how can you tell if the TC locks up in 3rd. I know thats probably a dumba$$ question.

I know at 166,000 miles its time for a new trans. My plan is to buy a cheap used trans and rebuild kit, Sure Cure, new sensors and solenoids and rebuild myself but that will be sometime next month before I have the funds for all the parts. I'm just trying to get this one to work right until then.
Nah not in denial at all. Lol. I already KNOW I need another trans and working on that issue now but just trying to learn as much as I can. I just wasn't sure EXACTLY what problems that could cause. Just happened to see the note in the MonteC thread about the differences in sensors. I don't have any other shift problems as far as late shifting, etc so I was kinda confused and wondered if my sensor has been changed by the PO and replaced with the wrong one. If the sensors and computers don't match then wonder why I don't have other shifting issues? Beginning to wonder EXACTLY what was done to the truck by the PO....

OK. First, I know you are new here. but posting only part of the information is pretty foolish.
SNAP RING in tranny? REALLY? and that was not worth mentioning?
Until the snap ring is addressed, nothing else will matter. Keep driving and it will shell like a grenade. To learn, don't get people responding to half of the situation. Go to the FAQ/DIY section and download the service manual. The transmission section of the manual is very well written and very concise. Read it and you will get some valuable information. I read it and decided to overhaul my own tranny!

Umm wasn't trying to post only half the info or anything like that. I know the snap ring is more than likely the problem but I was also interested about other issues and trying to learn more before I tear into one myself. I keep reading about how finding small pieces of snap rings in the tranny is common with the 46re, Wasn't sure if the wrong sensor could contribute to the problem and wanted to ask especially since it did kick into OD that one time and was smooth as could be. As far as searching the site to glean info thats exactly what I have been doing. I have downloaded all the manuals (service manual for truck as well as the trans) and also the rebuild video. Didn't mean to sound like an uneducated putz and certainly wasn't trying to mislead anyone as far as what the problem may be. Hope I don't sound like a putz again in this reply...I do have a tendency to be an a$$ sometimes.

Your tranny needs a rebuild. They only time a piece of snap ring is "common" is before a melt down. That is the OD clutch snap ring. It holds a 800 pound spring - going to let go like a hand grenade.....
Yeah I already came to the conclusion that it's time for a rebuild. Just hoping and praying it makes it until I can get the funds for parts. Waiting on a check for a remodel I did and hopefully will have it asap so I can get this done before the grenade goes off.
But my intention with this thread was more along the lines of the governor sensor. If the sensors are different and won't work with the wrong comp then wonder why mine isn't having other shift issues? I was just trying to learn more about the function of the sensor. Plus like I said I'm kinda wondering if this thing hasn't had the tranny changed and replaced with an earlier year or the wrong part was put in.

Go to page 21-251 in the 96 manual and page 21-540 of the 01 manual
you will see that the Governor Pressure Solenoid Valve is the same for both years(all years in fact).
Found some pictures. You should have this one and the last one.

The GOVERNOR PRESSURE SENSOR is what MonteC is refering to and it is different.
Pay attention to the shape of the electrical connectors on each sensor, they are not interchangeable.
Yours is the bottom one. Its for 2000 and newer.
