Default transmission cooler bypass?

Have a new to me 2000 1500 4x4 with a 318/46re. The stock transmission cooler is bypassed to an aftermarket cooler that's about 12"x12". Previous owner says the guy that rebuilt the tranny bypassed it but he couldn't give me a reason why. How safe is it to run this setup or do I need to reconnect the stock cooler and use it as an auxillary. I don't do much hauling but live in the mountains. I searched but not much info on it. Thanks in advance.

Probably bypassed it so he wouldn't have to try and clean the crap from the dead trans out of there. If you flush it REALLY well, you could hook it back up.... Not sure if its really necessary though. If it gets rather cold where you live, might want to......

Doesn't get to cold since its Georgia. I have noticed though that the fittings on the radiator look like they have never been hooked up with the rubber caps still over them. It looks like they were hooked to the a/c condensor. Just making sure I won't run into problems!

They bypassed the trans cooler in the radiator when they rebuilt the trans in my 98. The lines go to the cooler in front of the radiator only (aftermarket cooler). Have had no problems, live in MS. Not known for real harsh winters here. Was about 60 today lol.
