Considering that's the whole external aluminum case, wouldn't you be better off getting a whole case used somewhere?

Am I interpreting the diagram right in that the said spring is b/t the forks? Would there be enough play in those to have them bind or impact that spring?

I don't think so... I guess we'll see when i tear into it this weekend. I wish i could do it tonight, but i'm stuck here till 6

For about 700 miles the truck was driven with no rear snap ring (the common one everyone talks about). I bet it was during this time that it worked it's way loose, with nothing holding everything together.
