Question 96 Dodge Ram 1500 overdrive problems

Hi everyone I need help figuring out what is wrong with my dodge. It is a 96 2wd ram 1500.It shifts fine and has reverse, but when it is time for it to go into overdrive it sounds as if it is falling apart. It makes a horrible grinding, squealing like noise like something is dragging on the road and catches as if the breaks are locking up. The Breaks are fine we have already checked for problems with that, but the crazy thing is if you turn the overdrive off it never acts up. It doesn't seem to have any problems, but as soon as you turn overdrive back on it starts acting crazy again. Any advise.

Welcome to DF
Then I would the problem is in the overdrive unit. You may need to remove the overdrive unit, without removing the transmission and inspect. I will be moving your post to the 2nd Gen Ram section.

If your hearing grinding noise's it may be time for a transmission rebuild

Probably wouldn't hurt to drop the pan and see if you find anything interesting floating around. Reason it shift's fine with OD Off is because you are locking out the overdrive gear when OD is Off, so you've only got the 3 speeds.

It could also be TCC if it is not the OD unit. If it is either of these, it is rebuild time.

I would drop the pan and see what you find.
It sounds like you may have had the snap ring in the OD unit go to pieces.

I am betting O/D unit as well. TCC still locks with O/D turned off.
