Default Power Steering Help

Hi 2nd Gen Ram Group.

I am picking up a 1996 1500 Laramie 4x4 this afternoon. My first ever truck. It is mint, a barn find from the original owner. Has some dings but looks very well maintained otherwise. The power steering is not working. I am looking for some ideas on where to start trouble shooting this. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Welcome to DF.

Verify that there is p/s fluid in the pump first...... If it has been sitting for a while, it might just be gummed up.

After some research, on-line and at NAPA, I am replacing the whole deal. The pump, hoses and steering box will cost about $250. I have the bolts for the steering box loosened. Spent a few hours today just cleaning the underside. Everything was wet with what looks like power steering fluid. All clean now so I will have to wait and see what if anything else leaks.

You might want to check the ball joint on the pitman arm while you have it off, and see if tie rod ends are bad. Replacing steering with issues there will really be irritating!
