Ignition Differences
Okay this may be common knowledge and maybe my facts are totally wrong (but I don't think so). Anyway my friend has a 2001 dakota with a 318. Now since my ram was a 2001 with a 318 (before I did the engine swap),I figured they would be configured nearly to identically the same. Was I wrong. The throttle body is different, the intake is different and the thing that blew my mind was that his truck had coil packs versus a distributor. wierd.
I was just curious, is there any extra benifit to having coil packs and if so could this be added to a ram since it is on the dakota? I know it would be a lot of work and it possibly sounds good in theory. But just a thought.

According to Wikipedia..... (yeah, I know.....) the Dakota's came with a selection of engines, including the 5.2. So far as I know though, the magnum series engines NEVER came with a DIS system..... Wonder if he is actually looking at the 4.7??
According to Rock Auto, there is no listing for a 5.2. , 5.9 and 4.7 yes. And the 4.7 uses the 8 coil setup. So the whole discussion is mute anyway. Because it aint gonna work in his truck.
My Yota has 3 coil packs on a 6 cylinder. The ECU has to fire the correcto coil pack (fires 2 cylinders at same time - wierd, huh). Our PCMs are not set up to fire more than one coil - so I would think EVERYTHING would need to be rewired and find a Frankenstein PCM....Not likey to work....
Yeah I thought the same thing too. But It says Magnum V8 under the hood and he said it was a 318. He probably didn't know what he was talking about. It is probably a powertech. I researched a couple of pictures and found where they have the world magnum imprinted on the air filter.
