Where is the best place to get the parts and directions once I find out what I need?
If I do find a cheap enough tcase, do all the #s need to match up or what should I look out for?
I found a np231j 5209 8417 from a 1997 wrangler. will it work since its from a jeep? I dont want to modify anything if I buy one.

BTW Thanks big time for all of the fast responses!!

And here is a great resource - in the FAQ/DIY section, there is a service manual and a parts manual you can download. It is worth the money.....oh, wait.....no charge.....

And when you get into it - we want pics!

Default Finally an update

ok. I'm sorry for the long delay in following up on this transfer case issue, but lack of funds and snow here in Utah put this fix on the back burner.
After determining that the tcase was bad, I went on a search for a used one, and found one pretty close for $175.00. Put it in and it seems to work fine in 4hi and 4lo. However it is very hard to get into 4 lo and once its in, its just as hard to get out. I'm going to inspect the linkage and go from there.
Any other suggestions would be great!

Check the service manual I referenced in previous post. It should help.

4Lo isn't synchronized, and therefore, can be... well... problematic..... not unusual. The trick is, put the trans in neutral, have the truck barely rolling, and YANK the stick into 4Lo..... quick, and firm. Works every time for me.
