Mercury switch should have power at all times, regardless of key position. Open the hood, light comes on. (so long as the battery has juice)

Wouldn't be hard to wire it up to come on WITH the underhood light though.

+1 on that. Under hood light is only slightly better than useless....not enough light, and never where you need it. Mine has an additional connector near the light. Did these come with 2 lights originally?

The LED set should not use much power and would not likey overload circuit.

I have LEDs behind my grille and I stole power from the under light and have it wired to a switch, and i haven't had a problem.

They have been in there for over a year

I believe that extra plug is for the Ambient Temp sensor for the overhead console if your vehicle has that option.

A\Locating the ambient temp sensor under the hood doesn't make much sense to me. Seems the engine temp would throw it off.....but I never saw one that was very accurate. Maybe that's why!

Not sure about other harness but on my 96 the temp sensor is located on the driver side of the rad support
