Default no bus code on speedometer

I blew a headgasket the other day in my 99 dodge ram 5.9 4x4 short bed.
motor was using alot of oil. Shop recommended putting another motor in. so thats what they did. but the motor they got was out of a 96 ram 5.9. intake and all electrical was diff, so we switched all of my electrical and intake over the other block. they put the other motor in and connected everything and started it. it was smoking really bad and they said it was cause of all the coolent and everything that got stuck in the cat. they shut the truck off and now it wont start again. gauge cluster wont work and no bus light comes on, on the speedometer, they dont know what the problem is. they said it could be the computer. if anyone can help with this please let me know how. im broke down in another state in the middle of a move from florida to ohio. im in south carolina. thank you.

There's many threads asking about this. Searched and found this on the first page...

Your instrument cluster isn't gettin any info over the bus that's why you get the 'no bus' message and none of your gauges work.
This can be caused by any shorted module or broken bus wire. A few PCM sensors can cause this problem too.
As you have a No Start I'm inclined to think it is a PCM related problem.
First check ALL fuses and engine grounds.
Next do a visual inspection. Are any wires cut or pinched? A common one is to get wires pinched between the engine and trans.
If all that checks out unplug the following sensors: Cranks sensor, Cam/SYNC sensor, TPS, MAP and Trans connector. These 5v sensors can short out the CCD bus because they share the same power source.
You will have to cycle the key off and on to reset the PCM and CCD bus once you find the problem.
Crank sensor is the most common sensor to short.

Good luck

crank sensor is also the easiest to break and/or pinch the wire in a motor swap. its also the hardest SOB to get to, on the passenger side, behind the block, and sticking down into the bell housing.

i had a no bus when i left the ground wires loose at the PS bracket.

rabblers suggestion above it good - unplug all the sensors to see if it will go away, and then add them back one at a time to see which one triggers the error.

ok they put another computer in it and it runs now. but the temp gauge dont work, and they put a new sensor in. the check engine light is on(they say from temp gauge)abs light is on, brake light is on, seatbelt light is on. wth is wrong with this thing. they are wanting me to take the truck like this. im paying them over $2500 for this and they want to leave me with all this, then they were like lets just put a separate gauge in the truck to check the temp. all the gauges and everything worked fine when i took them in, im starting to get pissed

They put a 'new' motor in, and now a bunch of stuff doesn't work? Hhmmm... Sounds to me like they DON'T know what they are doing. If they got a used PCM, the difference in VIN numbers from the 'new' PCM, to what should be in there, will turn on a bunch of lights. PCM needs to be flashed to the correct vin.

Temp gauge is driven by the PCM, if all the other gauges work, except the temp gauge, I would look at the thermostat.....

You brought them a truck with no problems, other than the blown headgasket, you paid them to fix it. They are trying to give you back a truck that has some more problems. That doesn't fly very well with me. I would suggest to them that they either FIX it, or refund you your money, and give you back your truck.

If they want to be uncooperative.... Take your truck back, make sure they note ON THE REPAIR ORDER (your receipt) what is STILL wrong with the truck, take it someplace that has a clue, get it fixed, take the original shop to small claims for the cost of repairs.

I'm wondering if they are the them who are over there.
