Default Brake Lights Staying ON

Hello,

I drive a 1995 2500 V10 4x4, today it developed a problem.

My brake lights are staying on. I wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't for the trailer brake controller being stuck at 99 when I got out of the truck This is what I have done.

1. Unplugged brake controller
2. Reset brake switch
3. Unplugged brake switch

Would imagine if the switch is unplugged they would shut off, right, because they didn't.

Any thoughts?

I'd replace the brake switch, theyre not that much money. Not sure if unplugging it would cause them to go out or not...

Picked up the brake switch today a solid 2 minutes after the auto parts place closed. Will be putting it in first thing the morning, of course my fiancee is happy since it is Bassmaster Classic weekend.

I thought it may be a fuse but ruled it out since on my 88 Trans Am if the fuse goes out I have no lights, it may be different on ABS vehicles though. Would the RWAL/ABS fuse be the issue?

Hey Robert. Don't know if you fixed your problem with the new switch or not. if you did, disregard this post. Check your trailer plug. I had a similar problem with my 01 1500. My reverse lights were staying on no matter what I did. Took the factory 7 wire plug off and found it was shorting out on the inside. If you didn't do the switch yet check the plug before you blow money for no reason.

I went through the wiring and everything was solid, finally got frustrated and took it to the shop. Ended up being the multifunction switch. Crazy. $215, but still, I'd gladly pay that price to have somebody else do it.

Default 97 Ram 1500 Brake lights staying on. Solved!

I tried disconcerting the trailer llug, brake light switch and replaced the multi function switch. Non of those fixed it. It was the trailer brake controller relay attached to the fender just below the fuse box under the hood. See pic. Hope this helps!

This was the culprit. The relay just below the fused box attached to the fender.
