Angry 1996 Idle Air Control Valve going bad problem!

About every 4-6 months my idle air control valve goes bad and I am stumped on why. When I replace it the truck starts and runs perfect. Then a few months later it starts but idles rough at first. Then it finally gets to a point where it will start but after a couple seconds stall. I have to keep the rpms up with the throttle to keep it running. Why would the truck keep going through these idle air controls?

Have you replaced or at least checked the TPS? It can cause the same problem.

Worst case scenario, buy an IAC from O'Reilly Auto Parts or another auto store that has a lifetime warranty. They'll just keep on exchanging them for you as they go bad.

Yeah thats what I have been doing with autozone. I just dont think replacing this valve is normal every 4-6 months. I just dont get what causes it to go bad. And I havent replaced the TPS yet.

Have you cleaned the throttle body? When my original went bad that second one lasted about 2 months then I removed and cleaned the throttle boddy and have greater than 3 years and counting if my memory is right on number 3. I guessed it was the build up putting added strain on it causing it to fail (but that is a guess I have no basis for.)

I have taken the throttle body off and cleaned it quite a few times now. And its never really that dirty. Theres some carbon but its nothing excessive. Idk whats wrong.

Get a standard motor products unit, or one from the dealer. Make sure all the connections are clean. Both at the IAC, AND at the PCM.

Okay I will look that brand up. And where is the PCM located? I was also going to maybe buy a new throttle position sensor. Maybe that has something to do with it?

TPS is a possible.....

PCM is on the firewall, passenger side of the engine.
