Did compression Test on 1999 Dodge truck
Did you ever do a wet compression test? I would consider replacing the rings on the #8 cylinder just to make sure that wasn't your problem. The heads are off and you said you are going to drop the oil pan. Wouldn't be much more work to push the piston out from the bottom and replace the rings right?
If the problems been cleared and the cylinder is still relatively good shape, why not? After 130k you probably at least want to run a ball hone in there first.
My friend who has done a lot of motor work believes that it was the gasket from the way it looked. He showed me how it looked from the others. he checked the walls. I'm right now bottom out on my cash. He feels that I should be fine. He is one of those guys that can fix from a lawn mower to completely rebuild industrial machines. He also pointed out that they didn't clean up the manifold from that factory like they should have. the cross flow had a lot of burs that he cleaned up and said it would increase some HP as well as save on fuel. he really went over and inspected it. he also said when it comes time and if needed. he would rebuild the motor for me. said it was cheaper than buying a rebuilt from the auto store. right now I just was limited to what I can do. he wanted to do the lower end while everything was off but I didn't have the cash for it but my funds didn't allow it. he said it should be fine. we will do another compression test when everything it back on.
I thought since I had the time, I would go ahead and start the cylinder head on but ran into something that I must say I didn't think would. I was having a problem with the gasket wanting to go on one side one way then the other side opposite. I was thinking maybe there was a left and right side but I didn't see anything saying that. has anyone ever ran into this weird issue? It was like no matter how many time I flipped and looked at it and going by the pins. I just couldn't get the darn thing to match. I honestly thought I was loosing my mind. I am going to start fresh again before the rain comes our way to give it another go. I am just amazed that it was this crazy. I mean there only a couple ways to flip to match but when there were in the same direction. the pins didn't line up. I compared them to the ones that came off and they match so I am missing something. crazy isn't it? lol
Not at this point. weather hasn't been good. we have some thunderstorm for the next few days and this band of rain is going slower than expected. I did get the head gaskets figured out. I thought was weird that they flip opposite of each other. As soon as this weather goes through, I am going to get them finished. I have the heads in place and all covered up waiting. so I am on hold at the moment. I don't have a cover shed to work on it. i will update when I can get back on it. Thanks
I have what seems like a dumb question but I have got to ask. I have smaller gaskets and some o rings that I haven't removed from the motor in the kit. Is there parts in the kit I wont use? I figured the small o rings are replacements for the fuel injectors and it has the thermostat gasket but I wont need it since the new one came with one. I cant find anything to list every part that came with the kit. heck they give you nothing but the parts in the kit. I just dont want to over look anything. today is really nice so I want to get her back together and do a oil change. I have a new radiator gong in as well. Im looking forward to hearing her run again and back on the road soon.
I ended up calling a couple places before I got my answer. they are different from each other on how they sit. I also after brain kicked back in and went over my pictures as well. I never thought to take a mental note of them when removing the heads. I got them on and torque down. now I have to torque rocker arms down. I am slowly getting it back together. the Haynes book bounces all over and I find some information isn't easy to find in there. I don't rush by any means and want everything torque to correct settings. I have to put a drop of clean oil on the push rods that I didn't do but at least I don't have to go back and loosen at this point. That was a dumb move on my part. I just want all my torque specifications correct. That`s very important issues with me. I want this done right. I plan on having this truck around for a long time as well it will go to my daughter. I am sure by then, it will have a rebuilt motor but for now, I want to get the mileage out of this one.
This is a whole new adventure for me and it can get stressful at times to not make any mistakes. I drained the oil and its pretty much brown but doesn't have much water if any. I'm thinking that the water was getting out through the exhaust more than anything. the plenum was showing signs of leaking but gasket didn't look bad there but its being replaced. there is gaskets in the kit that I haven't removed so I try to make sure I don't miss. you guys have been great on here when I have any questions. I just find the Haynes book sometimes confusing and you have to bounce all over the book for some information. I find that at least here, I can get a straight forward answers. that helps a lot for a person like me. once I do something, then I am fine after that.
