Default no reverse

I have a 2001 ram 2500 that doesn't go into reverse. What's up and what do I need to do to get it to work?

More information would make a guess into a better guess.....

Can I assume auto tranny?

Check linkage adjustments first. How many miles on truck? Did it suddenly just not waork one day with no warning or other issues? Does speedometer work?

If all forward gears work fine, this is not good. If only reverse is jacked, it is most likely rear band or the rear servo. Just for giggles and grins, is the fluid level correct (while being checked in neutral)?

The bands is not what i wanted to hear. The servo can be changed while the trans in in the truck? How do i tell if it's cracked? Who makes a worth while rebuild kit? Im not doing this twice.

Checking in Park does not provide a good reading. Something about the fluid routing.....

Band may need adjusting, but usually it will slip and provide some warning. I lost reverse in mine one time - the band strut fell out! The servo cna be replaced by pulling pan.

Parts can be ordered from www.wittrans.com

Do you have the service manual form ther FAQ/DIY setion? Good read - great info in trans section.

Band does not normally brak. Friction may wear off, but usually after a period of time slipping.

More likely strut fell out or servo cracked. If there is a crack in the servo piston or the seal on it went bad, it will not hold enough pressure to engage the band.

If the strut fell out, this is waht you will see.

If you look at the adjusting screw and lock nut, that is where you need to adjust the band. Need an inch pound torque wrench to adjust. The servo piston is abover the rounded stud. A snap ring holds it in. You can remove and inspect closely.
