Rpm reving and dropping
Hi all, Has anyone seen this problem and does anyone know what to do. I have a '01 Ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.2 in it. It started reving up while driving. I get to about 1500 rpm and the tac revs quick up two about 2000 and drops back down. It started to do this from time to time. Then my tranny would clunk while stopped and shift at high revs.I brought it to a transmission shop and they said nothing was wrong with it and just changed the filter and fluid. The tranny bought the farm. I had it completely rebuilt and at transmission cooler installed at a differnt transmission shop.$3600 latter it was fine. but after about a month the engine is reving up again. At first only occassionally. I brought it back to the transmission shop that rebuilt it. They put a computer on it and drove it and said nothing wrong. I drove it with him and it didnt happen. I took the truck back and now it is doing it constantly. Back to the tranny shop. They told me I need a Plenam gasket. From the symptoms Ive read this doesnt make sense. But now the truck is reving up and dropping back over and over constantly once it reaches close to 1500 miles. I feel it is probably something other then the transmission but that it will kill the transmission if it is not fixed soon. Any ideas?
Plenum won't have anything to do with it. Sounds like what you are getting is a flare when it shifts? Constant hunting for what gear it wants to be in? Might be as simple as a TV cable adjustment, (but I doubt it.) Since it is always doing it now, go back to the tranny shop, and have 'em take a drive.
Do you happen to know if they changed the governor pressure sensor and solenoid?
3600 dollars for a trans rebuild? You got robbed.

Yes I got robbed, also I took the truck back twice. they said the truck drove awsome. I even told them keep it over the weekend and drive it, there was no way they could miss the reving problem. However, and Im no mechanic, after thinking and thinking and reading all the threads here I decide to bite the bullet and try something. I changed the TPS (throttle pressure sensor). It was a simple $36 and 15minutes and that was it. No more reving. So happy to have finally got to the bottom of this. I love my truck and this site.
