New transfer case. New problems.
Hello guys.
Around 10 o'clock thursday i finished putting in the transfercase i got from my junkyard. We replaced it's internals from the original t-case. I cracked the housing on my original one so we went and got an older model np231. 4x4 works and everything, but i'm having problems with changing from park to reverse to drive and so on.
To start the truck, i have to have the shift indicator in "D". And to go into drive i have to move it to "2" then back to "D". I rarely can start the truck in park or neutral. Reverse works. I'm thinking my shift linkage needs to be calibrated but i'd like some input from you guys. I don't get why a new t-case would do this... but it does. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Jason.

i don't understand why a t-case replacement would have anything to do with the auto transmission shift linkage. you didn't remove or re-adjust any of this did you? you just remove the t-case, worked on it, and put it back on, right?
there are 2 adjustments to your auto trans gear selector. the acutal linkage is on the drivers side, near the front of the trans. adjustments here should correspond to the "stops" on the shift lever on the column (PRND21) count the stops and adjust this correctly first.
edit - also, at the linkage is an electrical switch called Neutral Safety Switch. a ball inside that switch locks out the starter in all shift positions other than Park and Neutral and is supposed to prevent it from starting when its actually in gear. This switch can go bad.
additionally there is the little red PRNDL indicator in the dash. its adjusted by twisting a little white plastic gear under the column, behind the cover. it adjusts the length of the cable attached to the little red indicator.

Thanks. It has nothing to do with the shift indicator. I adjusted that long before the t-case cracked. I'll go with The first thing. I'll take a look at that tomorrow. Maybe that got knocked around or something. Thanks alot. How would i adjust the actual linkage?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Procedure for adjustment is in the service manual. Basically, disconnect the linkage, put trans in neutral, but shifter in neutral, adjust as necessary to get the linkage to go back together.
Seams like something got bent when i jacked up the tranny to get the mount to come out. Took it to a friends shop and his brother mike who works there aswell tried adjusting it. It didn't really do much so i assume something got bent. I'll have to work on it another day. Its still driveable and i can put it in reverse and drive with no problem but starting in park or neutral is sometimes tricky but rarely. Thanks.
